Things I've Learned
Today I'm starting a new series of blogsays (blog entries crossed with essays) about the things I've learned running a decently sized web service.
As I'm approaching graduation, I've been thinking about how much I've learned since I matriculated to UChicago. I've definitely learned a lot: humanities, social sciences, music, computer science, western civilization, economics, life in general, etc.
Over the last few months in particular I've learned an insane amount about running a web site, too. On the technical front, I've learned about scalability and distributed file systems (I'm currently doing some formal research on this... more later). But more than that, I've gained an invaluable amount of experience about the dynamics of running the web site.
Let's face it, less than a year ago I was basically flying blind. I'm a 21 year old college student working without much prior experience. Now we're running a web service happily providing access to well into five-digits worth of registered users. And, we're getting more professional every day, I think.
With this in mind, I'm going to start a series of blogsays called Things I've Learned. We've made a lot of mistakes so far -- and have had a lot of luck -- so I want to share all things that I think have made an impact in getting us where we are today. Things like being fast and cheap, working just-in-time, giving back, and more.
Look out for some new posts coming in the next few days.
