Improving Hybrids Through Formula One: KERS

I’m pretty far behind the curve on this one, but I’ve been doing some reading on KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) recently. KERS will be used in F1 starting in 2009, storing energy (which is lost while slowing the car) into batteries. In the past, Formula 1 has provided some of the greatest additions in technology to automobiles, including:

  • Traction Control
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Fuel Injection
With F1 working on the problem, I think we’ll see dramatic increases in battery technology (and weight reduction) as well as overall hybrid technology. I’m excited to see how long it takes to translate to road cars. Read more about KERS:
